  50.     The New American Standard Bible has been produced with the conviction
  51.  that the words of Scripture as originally penned in the Hebrew, Aramaic,
  52.  and Greek were inspired by God.  Since they are the eternal Word of God,
  53.  the Holy Scriptures speak with fresh power to each generation, to give
  54.  wisdom that leads to salvation, that men may serve Christ to the glory of
  55.  God.

  57.     The Editorial Board had a twofold purpose in making this translation: to
  58.  adhere as closely as possible to the original languages of the Holy
  59.  Scriptures, and to make the translation in a fluent and readable style
  60.  according to current English usage.

  85.                         EXPLANATION OF GENERAL FORMAT

  87.  PARAGRAPHS are designated by a paragraph mark.

  89.  QUOTATION MARKS are used in the text in accordance with modern English
  90.  usage.

  92.  "THOU," "THEE" AND "THY" are not used in this translation except in the
  93.  language of prayer when addressing Deity.

  95.  PERSONAL PRONOUNS are capitalized when pertaining to Deity.

  98.  original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek but implied by it.  Italics are used in

  101.  SMALL CAPS in the New Testament are used in the text to indicate Old
  102.  Testament quotations or obvious allusions to Old Testament texts.
  103.  Variations of Old Testament wording are found in New Testament citations
  104.  depending on whether the New Testament writer translated from a Hebrew
  105.  text, used existing Greek or Aramaic translations, or paraphrased the
  106.  material.  It should be noted that modern rules for the indication of
  107.  direct quotation were not used in biblical times thus allowing freedom for
  108.  omissions or insertions without specific indication of these.

  110.  ASTERISKS are used to mark verbs that are historical presents in the Greek
  111.  which have been translated with an English past tense in order to conform
  112.  to modern usage.  The translators recognized that in some contexts the
  113.  present tense seems more unexpected and unjustified to the English reader
  114.  than a past tense would have been.  But Greek authors frequently used the
  115.  present tense for the sake of heightened vividness, thereby transporting
  116.  their readers in imagination to the actual scene at the time of
  117.  occurrence.  However, the translators felt that it would be wise to change
  118.  these historical presents to English past tenses.

  127.                     EXPLANATION OF NASCB FORMAT FEATURES

  129.  BRACES ({ }) are used to indicate words which are not found in the original
  130.  Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek but implied by it.  (ITALICS are used in the NASCB
  131.  for these words.)

  133.  PARENTHESIS "( )" enclose Psalm titles.  A Psalm title will always appear
  134.  within verse 1 of the corresponding Psalm.

  136.  POUND SIGNS (#) indicate passages of poetry.  A pound sign marks the
  137.  beginning and the end of a passage of poetry.

  139.  REVERSE SLANTS (\\) are used in the Old Testament for two of the special
  140.  names of God: \Lord\ (Heb. YHWH) and Lord \God\ (Heb., Adonai YHWH).
